You've probably installed a shelf or coat rack onto drywall before. If you have or haven't, a recap never hurts. Some anchor options are plastic expansion anchors, toggle bolts, Molly bolts, and threaded drywall anchors. If you're not planning on putting super heavy objects on your new item, then plastic screw anchors will work perfectly.
To insert a Molly bolt anchor, you'll need to use a drill bit that is exactly the same diameter of the anchor. Insert the screw into your Molly bolt. Using that bit, drill a depth that allows you to insert the entire Molly bolt inside. Then, place the pilot hole on your new item so it matches up with the anchor hole and drill the screw into the anchor. Stress test it to make sure it feels secure, and you're good to go!
NOTE: Since we provide drywall screws for you, anchors are not necessary to mount your item. If you do decide to have anchor support however, these screws are compatible only with plastic screw anchors and plastic threaded drywall anchors.
God forbid you put a hole in your beautiful exposed brick! Sometimes, you just have to make sacrifices for a new shelf. First, you'll need a masonry drill bit. Some say that a hammer drill is necessary but in 9 out of 10 cases, a regular drill with the right masonry bit will work perfectly. You can use plastic expansion anchors, metal shield anchors, concrete screws, and sleeve anchors for brick mortar. Wedge anchors are heavier duty and are meant for concrete instead of mortar.
When you're drilling the pilot hole, make sure you drill into the mortar and NOT the brick.
Better safe than sorry, I always say.
